Smellicopter, the latest recording from singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Scott Brookman, clocks in as an extension of his prior ventures, which brings much comfort since repairs or improvements are not required when one is as creative as he is.
Invoking the holy trinity of Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, and Emitt Rhodes, Scott still succeeds at inserting his own talent and character into the meticulously-sculpted statements heard on the disc. Scripted of keen lyrics, ranging from abstract to intriguing to humorous, Scott’s observations of people and situations are addressed from the inside out.
A full-blown production, featuring keyboards, ukuleles, saxophones, glockenspiels, flugelhorns, drums, banjos, electric guitars and even a lampshade and bicycle, Smellicopter combines elegance with eccentricity with agreeable results. Clear and shiny vocals, accompanied by jubilant female choruses and imaginative creases and curves hold tight as further assets manning the material.
Navigated by swaying rhythms, “I Could Use Some New Friends,” the bubbly “Summer’s Two Week’s Notice” and the quirky motions of “Weirdos” make good as select highlights on Smellicopter, where “Daisy Von Zeppelin” and “Tim E. Redmond” stand to be equally catchy and memorable.
Carpeted floor to floor with glossy melodies, intricate arrangements, and gorgeously garbed sonic innovation, “Smellicopter” is ambitious and arty, but truly obtainable. A lot of thought and effort was put into this great record, confirming that once again Scott has whipped up yet another solid gold pop prize. Rewarding on every level, Smellicopter is a real beauty!
