‘They probably play those Beatles songs better than the Beatles’: Aerosmith’s Joey Kramer on Paul McCartney’s band

Joey Kramer says there wasn’t much to draw him into the Grammys broadcast save for a partial reunion of the Beatles. That, he says, was enough to endure a show that didn’t have nearly enough rock music.

“I’ll watch, and always watch, and always be loyal to anything about the Beatles, in any way, shape or form,” Kramer tells Orlando in the Morning, “because of what they are, and what they represent to me and when I grew up — and how they had an impact on me.”

For Kramer, who co-founded Aerosmith with Steven Tyler, Tom Hamilton and Joe Perry in 1970, the wonder is that surviving Beatles Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are still so active in music this late into their Hall of Fame careers.

Kramer showers praise on McCartney the songwriter, but also on his working band, with whom Paul has been performing for more than a decade. They include Rusty Anderson, Brian Ray, Paul “Wix” Wickens and Abe Laboriel Jr.

“As far as Paul McCartney goes, I think that there is no one better,” Kramer adds. “I think he is the premier musician of our time. All the instruments that he plays, all of the songs that he has written and co-written, the guy is just amazing. You know, I think that the band that he has now, out on the road — which I have seen a couple of times — they probably play those Beatles songs that he’s doing better than the Beatles could ever do them.”

Kramer and Aerosmith issued Music from Another Dimension, their first album of new material in more than a decade, back in 2012. A live souvenir followed in 2013 called Rock for the Rising Sun, which documented a tour stop in Japan.
