The Neighbours – Prime Numbers (2013)

I would be remiss to not acknowledge the influence of Elvis Costello and the Attractions’ Get Happy on Pittsburgh’s Neighbours — along with a dash of the Jam and I’m sure Motown, too.

“Tell the Truth,” the opener on Prime Numbers (Get Hip Recordings), sounds like an outtake from Costello’s 1980 studio release. Meanwhile, the Jam’s influence shines on the piano driven and catchy up-tempo “Reminder,” and on the Motown-styled “No Matter the Season.” You could hear Paul Weller singing on this one.

“Fun” is a big sounding, live-in-th- moment Jam/Style Council hybrid that wouldn’t have sound out of place on the last Jam album, The Gift. Prime Numbers all adds up to fun, if you’re in the mood for a modern take on classic Elvis Costello or the Jam’s mod sound.
