‘We were surprised’: After late add, Red Hot Chili Peppers plan to take on rock classic for Super Bowl

Now that the Red Hot Chili Peppers have gotten over the shock of becoming a last-second addition to the Super Bowl halftime show, Chad Smith says they’re working up a very special classic-rock cover.

“We’re going to play Led Zeppelin’s live version of ‘Dazed and Confused,'” he tells Artisan News Service. [*His tongue was definitely in cheek, by the way. Smith later said the Peppers were going to cover Side 1 of Rush’s 2112: “Obviously I can’t tell you what we’re going to do, it would ruin the surprise,” Smith said. “Come on, you gotta watch! It’s gonna be great.”]

Bruno Mars, of course, is the headliner for the NFL championship match, which pits the Denver Broncos against the Seattle Seahawks on February 2, 2014. Whether the two bands will actually collaborate on stage remains unclear.

“We were surprised,” Smith admits. “Obviously, we know of Bruno Mars, but we were a little surprised that he asked us. We met him, and his band — and they’re great people. We’re excited to do it.”
