WTF?! Wednesdays: Matmos, “Tract for Valerie Solanas” (2006)

You might be asking yourself, “Self, what does a cow’s uterus have to do with music? And what does this have to do with Andy Warhol?”

I’ve owned a copy of Matmos’ The Rose Has Teeth In The Mouth Of A Beast for a long time. And here I will admit that I’ve never really done any research as to the crazy sounds that emanate from this particular track. Over a bed of pulsing beats, a woman reads feminist/anarchist-type material. It turns out that this is part of Valerie Solanas’ “SCUM Manifesto,” a work that called for the dissolution of the patriarchy, the monetary system, and men in general. Hey, who can blame her? We are jerks! Further investigations reveal that Solanas was the woman who tried to kill Andy Warhol. Wow, the story gets weirder and weirder.

In the middle of this track comes some disturbingly squishy sounds. I don’t really want to know their techniques, but it turns out that the sounds are coming from the uterus and vagina of a cow. Commentary of Solanas’ brand of feminism? I have no idea.
