Forgotten series: The Sir Finks – (Tres Mexicanos) Del Sur De Texas (2008)

This was a fun surf instrumental album from Get Hip, containing all of the Sir Finks’ material as recorded for the Wildebeest label.

“Double Buck,” which unfolds with a lively country and western gallop, works like a cool tribute to Buck Owens and the Buckaroos. There are also spacey nighttime tunes like “Moon’s Theme,” and a cool sinister-edged “Devil’s Agent.”

Covers include a fuzzed-out instro version of the Yardbirds’ “Heart Full of Soul; a Davie Allen-influenced “Boots,” remembered as Nancy Sinatra’s famed ’65 hit; Link Wray’s “Jack The Ripper,” with a drum solo workout; “Can’t Be Still,” which is transformed from Booker T. and the MGs’ original into a garage-a-go-go theme song; and, lastly, a lively version of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass’ “Spanish Flea.” Meanwhile, “Wound Up” comes on like mid-1960s Ventures, and the monstrous “Weird Beard” is ready made for Halloween.

Complete liner notes detail the whole story of this Corpus Christi, Texas band. A cool Rat Fink hot rod-styled cover completes the fab packaging. At a generous 22 tracks, this CD is a good bargain and a welcome enjoyable reissue anthology for surf music fans everywhere.
