Rare companion release from Chicago’s Stone of Sisyphus era surfaces online

Though it’s long been forgotten now, there was a CD-ROM component planned for Chicago’s shelved Stone of Sisyphus recording in the early 1990s — and it’s now surfaced online. Stream it here!

As you’ll hear: Ensoniq, the keyboard manufacturer, created a sound library with clips of band members to serve as a kind of sister project to Sisyphus. It vanished, however, when the companion studio effort was shelved for some 15 years. By the time the Peter Wolf-produced Sisyphus belatedly arrived in 2008, in fact, guitarist Dawayne Bailey was long gone. Vocalist Bill Champlin would depart the following year.

That makes this CD-ROM, which includes band-recorded samples of instruments, in-studio chatter and vocals for use on an Ensoniq keyboard, something of historical interest for fans. The original project also included a previously unreleased song called “Evangeline,” sung by Jason Scheff and featuring samples of Bailey, Tris Imboden’s drums and the famous Chicago horns.

For more on this piece of lost memorabilia, go to Bailey’s web site, where the guitarist has uploaded the original notes from Ensoniq, as well.
