Exclusive stream: Transatlantic, “Shine” from Kaleidoscope (2014)

Here’s a chance to sample Transatlantic’s first new music since 2009’s The Whirlwind, as the prog supergroup adds some much-needed warmth to a bitterly cold period.

“Shine” begins with a ruminative sense of wonder, as Roine Stolt’s pastoral guitar is joined by a Beatlesque vocal from Neal Morse. It’s almost two minutes in before Mike Portnoy begins to insinuate himself, then — as Stolt joins Morse at the mic — he and bassist Pete Trewavas catch a surging groove. From there, “Shine” finally lives up to its sun-drenched title, ramping up into a heart-filling anthem. Just what we need in the middle of a lingering polar vortex, right?

The track is part of a layered project called Kaleidoscope, due January 27, 2014 via InsideOut Music, which features two lengthy suites of music: the opening five-part “Into the Blue” and the stunning seven-part closing title track. A world tour will follow.

Transatlantic most recently issued concert recordings from their 2010 world tour, but since has seen its busy members scattered to the four winds. Morse has released a sequel to Testimony and done some work with Spock’s Beard, while Trewavas went back to Marillion, Roine to the Flower Kings and Portnoy to a series of other projects — including Adrenaline Mob and Flying Colors.
