Promoting a very worthy cause, Sweet Relief is series where all proceeds go to victims of natural disasters.
As attested by the previous two installments, Sweet Relief: Love is Everywhere (available for purchase via JAM Records) has been thoughtfully and carefully put together, resulting in a collection of top quality songs. Jeremy Morris, who not only contributes a couple of tunes to the disc, but owns and operates the label behind the project, encourages patrons in his liner notes to “sit back and listen to what a perfect radio station might sound like in a perfect world,” which to these ears, defines the contents with dead on accuracy.
Opening the ceremony is the Pete Best Band, featuring the original Beatles drummer, with the dreamy psychedelic drapery of “Come With Me,” while further kaleidoscopic curves are exuded on the buzzing Byrdsian raga rock of “The Beginning Of The End” from the Lemon Clocks, and the sterling shimmer of “All Sorts” by the Shambles.
A pair of tracks from the Tangerines, “Turn On The Light” and “One Good Reason” jingle with juicy jubilance, the Pranks make time with the bouncy and excitable “Modern Communication,” and Starry Eyed and Laughing’s “Meet Me Lord” favors a warm and inviting country folk feel.
Propelled by precision and punch, “Dandelion Man” from the Junipers, Nelson Bragg’s engaging “Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long,” the fuzzy intensity of “Heaven Help Me” by Shoes, Jeremy’s gleaming “Love Is Everywhere,” and the immediate vibrancy of “Gimme Your Love” from Mark and the Spies prove to be outstanding efforts as well.
Other prime pieces included on Sweet Relief: Love is Everywhere are the bruising and boisterous “Move Over” by the Mayflowers, and then there’s the Records turning in a cute and corny little ditty in the form of the herky-jerky “Gimme Coca Cola,” whereas the Lolas declare their admiration for the Yardbirds on a dashing version of “For Your Love,” and “You Me And Everybody” from the Suns flourishes with melodic appeal.
Awash in a pool of bright harmonies, gigantic hooks and becoming arrangements, Sweet Relief: Love is Everywhere is a guitar pop fan’s ticket to paradise. Beatles, Byrds, Who and Raspberries groupies are sure to drool over these great songs where power is tempered by structure, and craftiness is balanced by raw energy. Flawless pop rock, indeed.
The paisley-patterned sleeve Sweet Relief: Love is Everywhere is wrapped in certainly reflects the positive vibes the tunes represent. Every song here is truly a victory, guaranteeing the album to receive regular rotation from sea to shining sea!
