One Track Mind: Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, “Goldfinger” (2013)

Martin Scorcese’s newest film, The Wolf of Wall Street, features the director’s usual assortment of delectable oldies — but the best moment maybe belong to a new song. Or, really, a new version of an old song.

And not just any old song, but Shirley Bassey’s timeless theme from James Bond’s “Goldfinger,” maybe the very best of them all. So, it’s no small feat that Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings hold their own with this one, giving the song a slight contemporary flair even as Jones absolutely nails the throat-busting title moment.

Elsewhere, Scorcese’s soundtrack features Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning” and Earth Kitt’s “C’est Si Bon.” Great though they may be, none offers the fizzy surprises of this update. Jones, singing with a winking bull-fighter’s bravado, seems to have lost nothing, despite having endured a recent cancer battle.

Give the People What They Want, the Dap-Kings’ new album, is due on January 14, 2013 on Daptone. The group, founded by Neal Sugarman and Gabriel Roth, pushed back the album release date as Jones underwent treatment. But they’ll resume touring in February, beginning at the Beacon Theater in New York City.
