‘I’d have to lose 10 or 15 pounds’: Ace Frehley contemplates reuniting with Kiss again

Now that Kiss’ Gene Simmons — who previously said he’d never play with the band’s deposed original members again — has relented in the wake of their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, at least one question remains: Can Ace Frehley still fit into his old costume?

“I’d have to lose 10 or 15 pounds,” Frehley tells Eddie Trunk. “But that’s easy in three months, you know?”

Frehley, who co-founded the band with Peter Criss, Simmons and Paul Stanley in 1973, last played with Kiss in 2002. Criss hasn’t been with his former band since 2004. Since then, they’ve both written tell-all, relationship-severing books. In fact, Frehley hasn’t even donned his familiar Space Ace get up since doing a commercial for Dunkin’ Donuts, back in 2007.

There’s still a lot to be worked out, starting with the set list. Inductees typically only play three or four songs.

“We didn’t get that far,” Frehley added. “It was more of just a congratulatory call. After the holidays, we’ll sort it out and figure out how we’re going to do it.”

Since the departures of Criss and Frehley, Kiss has carried on with replacements Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer. Only the original quartet is being honored next April.

“I don’t have a problem with Tommy and Eric being there, out of makeup, if I’m in makeup — because they’re a big part of Kiss today,” Frehley says. “They had nothing to do with the beginning of Kiss, and nothing to do with the designs of the costumes or the make up, but they’re a part of Kiss today.”
