Steve Hackett leaves behind Genesis tributes for new solo work: ‘It’s been a thrill for me’

Steve Hackett is at work on a solo studio effort, his first since a hugely successful tribute album and tour devoted to his time in Genesis.

Hackett, a member of that band from 1971-77, last issued an LP in his own name in 2011, Beyond the Shrouded Horizon. The guitarist followed that up with a collaboration featuring Yes’ Chris Squire called A Life Within a Day in 2012. Up next, he says, is an appearance on a new guitar-focused project with Marillion’s Steve Rothery.

In the meantime, Hackett’s also gotten four songs into the new original project: “It’s fascinating to see things take shape,” Hackett tells Guitarhoo. “It’s always wonderful to see things work, to see things being born — these brain children in music.”

Genesis Revisited II, which followed Hackett’s 1996 look back at his tenure in one of prog’s signature groups, was a huge hit — going to No. 24 in the UK, and reaching the Top 50 in Germany and Italy. But he doesn’t admit any real pressure in trying to follow up that success.

“All music is a shot in the dark,” Hackett says. “I don’t want to sound negative, because it’s been a thrill for me, trying to find my way through the dark and to the light.”
