Boston has issued a churning new take on a Christmas classic, lathered with a typically tornadic riff from Tom Scholz — though, alas, it still misses the stratospheric presence of the late Brad Delp. Stream it here!
In Delp’s place on this boisterous version, winkingly redubbed of “God Rest Ye Metal Gentlemen,” is late-period Scholz collaborator Kimberley Dahme (who also plays bass), with guitarist Gary Pihl and Scholz backing her up. Tom Hambridge rounds out the group on drums. Of course, all of it’s really only window dressing for the guitar — or, as per usual, the guitar(s) — as Scholz crafts another seven-layer cake of sound. He calls it “Boston-izing” an old favorite, and it’s aptly put.
The arrival of “God Rest Ye Metal Gentlemen,” which is streaming for a limited time via Soundcloud, is part of a busy month for the rejiggered Boston, which released Life Love and Hope on December 3. Scholz has been working on the album, which includes several saved vocals from Delp, for much of the last decade.
The lead single, “Heaven on Earth,” features David Victor on vocals, with Louis St. August guesting. Delp committed suicide back in 2007.
