WTF?! Wednesdays: Bastard Noise, “The Duel of the Ant and the Dragonfly” (2013)

So a couple of weeks ago, a co-worker shouted out loud “Ugh, I just can’t get the damned Katy Perry song out of my head!” It turns out that he’s got some young daughters who like to play that stuff when they’re cruising around in the minivan.

Well, I told him that I had an antidote. At that particular moment, I had just started to listen to the Brutal Truth/Bastard Noise split album Axiom of Post Inhumanity. Billed as “harsh power-electronic noise insanity,” the record is not exactly easy listening. The first track, Bastard Noise’ “The Duel of the Ant and the Dragonfly,” sounds like a glitchy circuit gone horribly wrong. Take the most extreme elements of Merzbow and maybe bits of Trent Reznor’s sinister marching electronics and you’re part way there. Of course, you’re also alone because if you play this stuff in the presence of other humans, they might look at you funny and then excuse themselves.

I felt sort of bad for my colleague with the pop music earwurm, so I pulled the headphone jack from my computer and pressed “Play.” After about a minute of the ants and the dragonfly launching into some particularly crazed circuit bending, he looked over at me and said “I guess I’ll stick with Katy Perry.”

Oh well. His loss.
