Hard on the heels of a well-received 2012 studio effort Carnaby Street, Michael Des Barres took the stage at Hollywood’s Viper Room — never intending to issue a live album from the date.
Des Barres records everything, however, and what he found was a set that lives up to the moniker Hot ‘n Sticky. Issued now through MDBimmedia, the album finds Des Barres playing a straight-ahead, nasty-rocking string of favorites from his own career and from his principal influences — leading up to this evening-ending mixture of both impulses.
Des Barres, appearing alongside guitarist Mark Tremalgia, tears into “My Baby Saved My Ass” from his new album, “I Don’t Need No Doctor” from Humble Pie and then T Rex’s “Bang a Gong (Get It On),” which received new life after its mid-1980s resuscitation by the Power Station — with whom Des Barres memorably toured, in a period that included a stop at Live Aid.
Elsewhere, Des Barres touches on his time with Detective (1977’s “Detective Man”), a band personally inked by Jimmy Page to Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label; more from Carnaby Street; and even a bit of Motown (“Stop in the Name of Love”). It all leads here, to a raucous closing medley that puts an exclamation point on this tough-minded new concert offering from one of rock’s most spirited survivors.
