‘Gov’t Mule hopefully will continue’: Warren Haynes looks past tenures with Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead alumni bands

Despite having been a member of the Allman Brothers Band since 1989 and, more recently, part of a Grateful Dead-related tour, Warren Haynes says Gov’t Mule remains a priority.

In some ways, he adds, it has to.

“I still consider Gov’t Mule to be the thing that is really — I guess, ‘most important’ is the best way to put it,” Haynes says in this clip. “It takes most of our time. It’s a priority, in the way that when the Allman Brothers stop playing and the Dead stop playing, Gov’t Mule hopefully will continue to record and perform well into the future.”

Gov’t Mule just completed work on a forthcoming album that features new originals on one disc, and then a series of guest stars — including Jim James, Elvis Costello, Grace Potter and Dave Matthews, among others — sitting in on the second. This fall will see new dates with Gov’t Mule, as well as appearances with the Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration and, of course, the Allmans.

But first there’s the inventively presented Shout! Gov’t Mule’s Blue Note Records debut is set to arrive on September 24, 2013.

Haynes describes the band as “kind of our laboratory to do whatever we want to do,” adding: “We all get along famously; we’re all very close friends.”
