One Track Mind: Jann Klose, “Song to the Siren” from Mosaic (2013)

Jann Klose’s newly released album Mosaic confirms his rising reputation as an interpretive friend to the legacies of Tim Buckley and his son Jeff.

Klose is featured in the film “Greetings from Tim Buckley,” which premiered last April and has performed since 2008 as part of annual Jeff Buckley tribute shows in Chicago and Brooklyn. Those experiences have no doubt added to the depth of emotion that emanates from his album-closing take on “Song to the Siren” — originally from Tim’s from 1970 release Starsailor.

There’s more, of course, to the German-born Klose than all of this Buckley-ana. He’s toured and performed with Renaissance’s Annie Haslam and Jim McCarty, and the rest of Mosaic’s 10 tracks feature intriguingly original popcraft.

But this lovely song, so full of love-struck reverie — and, as the elder Buckley’s most famous composition, so very familiar — makes a fine entry point for those who have yet to discover Klose.
