‘I thought it was a great song’: Mike Love on the newly released Beach Boys track ‘Goin’ to the Beach’

Recorded during the sessions for 1980’s Keepin’ the Summer Alive, the heretofore-unreleased “Goin’ to the Beach” has been brought to life all over again. The track has become part of the Mike Love-led edition of the Beach Boys’ 2013 set list, and will be included on a forthcoming new multi-disc career-spanning box set called Made in California.

“These days, out on tour, we do it in our encore,” Love tells WFDU in this clip. “We come out and we do ‘Wild Honey,’ which is a rocking song, and then ‘Goin’ to the Beach’ — the newly discovered single that has been in the vaults for many, many years. It sounds fresh, and it goes so well right into ‘Surfin’ USA.’

“Goin’ to the Beach,” written by Love and produced by Bruce Johnston, will finally be issued on August 27, 2013 via Capitol Records — more than three decades later.

“We did that many times, though — we would over-record,” Love says. “You’d need 12 songs for an album, and we’d record 18. And what that meant was, not all of them got on the album, and some just got put in the archives.”

Keepin’ the Summer Alive, which only got to No. 75 in the U.S., was the final studio album issued before Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983. A mixture of old and new tracks, the project included songs dating back to 1969. “Endless Harmony,” a leftover from 1972, was the last to feature Dennis.

The title track was written by the late Carl Wilson along with Randy Bachman — who’s best known for forming Bachman Turner Overdrive after a stint in the Guess Who. “It had that ‘Takin’ Care of Business’ kind of groove to it,” Love adds. The pair also composed “Livin’ with the Heartache” together.
