Tommy Bolin’s instrumental version of “Spanish Lover” is a highlight of the forthcoming Purple Pyramid release Whirlwind, which features rare and previously unreleased tracks from the former James Gang, Billy Cobham and Deep Purple guitarist.

Whirlwind, due on August 13, 2013, was produced by Greg Hampton and Johnnie Bolin. Also included: a torrid, nearly half-hour take on “Marching Powder” from Bolin’s 1975 solo debut Teaser, along with tracks he was working on for a prospective third release when he passed a year later. The album will be available in a number of different expanded configurations; see Amazon links below.

The guitarist was with the James Gang from 1973-74, where he worked on the Bang! and Miami albums; and with Deep Purple from 1975-76, a period which produced their Come Taste the Band studio effort and various live projects. He collaborated with Cobham on the seminal fusion album Spectrum, also from 1973.

Bolin was on a promotional tour for Private Eyes, his second release, when he died of a tragic overdose. Whirlwind follows last year’s well-received multi-artist Bolin tribute project, Great Gypsy Soul.
