A fresh new funky tune with a percolating groove, twisting sax/keyboard lines, and bubbling, tasty jazz guitar licks. That can only mean one thing: The Jeff Lorber Fusion is set to return soon with the follow-up to its Best of 2012 winning release, Galaxy.

Back with official band members comprised of keyboard ace Lorber, ex-Yellowjackets bassist Jimmy Haslip and ex-Chick Corea Elektric Band saxophonist Eric Marienthal — with either Vinnie Colaiuta or David Weckl on drums — Hacienda will also feature the talents of Lenny Castro, Paul Jackson, Jr. and Jean-Luc Ponty. It’s almost like a thirty year fusion class reunion.

“Solar Wind” features the guitar services of yet another longtime studio vet, Larry Koonse. He lent a big hand on Galaxy and he’s back for an encore, which is welcome news. Says Lorber, Koonse is the type of guitarist who “kind of takes it outside a little bit, but in a way the average listener can still enjoy.” “Solar Wind” is the kind of song with a quick tempo, sudden chord changes and slinky unison lines that requires everyone to be on their toes and these consummate pros got it all covered. Delectable, succinct solos by first Marienthal then Lorber and then Koonse fill up the second half of the song.

Look for Hacienda to go on sale August 27, via Concord Records imprint Heads Up International. Visit Jeff Lorber’s website for more info.
