‘We often struggled to play the music we had written’: Steve Hackett returns to Genesis era on a mission

To a degree, Steve Hackett has returned to the music he made in the 1970s with Genesis so that he can write a few musical wrongs. After all, he has learned much in the ensuing years about his instrument.

“In Genesis, we were very young players,” Hackett tells Miriam Orlando in this video, “and we often struggled to play the music we had written.”

In keeping, Hackett has twice assembled all-star casts to rework songs from that time, most recently with last year’s Genesis Revisited II.

A massive tour followed, with more dates set for September.

Still, the guitarist remembers well the sense of musical discovery that surrounded those seminal Genesis recordings between 1971-77.

“I actually derived more pleasure from the guitar when I played simple things, when I was very young,” Hackett admits. “I think the more technique you learn, in a way, the more passion erodes. There’s a secret to finding some middle ground.”
