Foghat fan Phil Dessinger has won a contest to add lyrics to “495 Boogie,” the classic rock band’s first-ever instrumental. The new track, steaming here, is called “The World of Rock n’ Roll.”

Dessinger’s entry, which updates the most downloaded track from Foghat’s 2010 release Last Train Home, was selected by the band and a panel that included WAXQ’s Ken Dashow and Classic Rock Revisited’s Jeb Wright. It’s been released on Foghat Records.

“495 Boogie” originally grew out of a jam from founding drummer Roger Earl’s brother Colin, bassist Jeff Howell and harmonica player Lefty Lefkowitz. The late Mobile, Alabama disc jockey Charlie Ocean was the first to add lyrics, dubbing his version “Big American Blonde” — and the contest idea was born.

Dessinger, whose dad was a member of the CBS Orchestra, has previously written an off-Broadway rock musical and for a global campaign sponsored by UNICEF-Special Olympics.
