Roy Harper, perhaps best known to American audiences for his mid-1970s collaboration with Pink Floyd and for inspiring a Led Zeppelin deep cut, returns with his first album since 2000.
Man and Myth, due on September 23, 2013, will feature four Laurel Canyon-recorded songs with producer Jonathan Wilson. Three others were recorded in County Cork, Harper’s home since the late 1980s.
Harper, who sang lead on Floyd’s “Have a Cigar” from Wish You Were Here, was the subject of Plant and Page’s “Hats Off to (Roy) Harper” from 1970’s Led Zeppelin III. Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson has also mentioned Harper as a primary influence.
Still, Harper has remained most unknown in the states, probably because of his lengthy and complex compositional style. More recently, he has been writing poetry, essays, prose and other articles, but says he has not been moved to compose music again until recently.
Now rejuvenated, Harper is also set to appear at a pair of August music festivals, beginning with Escot Park’s Beautiful Days and then the Green Man at Glanusk. A trio of headliner shows follow in October, beginning at London’s Royal Festival Hall on the 22nd.
