Former MTV veejay Martha Quinn — a huge fan — recently posted a photo to Twitter when she ran into Steve Perry at a local farmer’s market.
Fans were shocked to see a lengthy scar running up the long-retired ex-Journey frontman’s right cheek.
Here’s why: Some three weeks back, Perry had a cancerous mole removed from his face. That led to two more surgeries over a two week period to remove all of the cancer cells, he says in a new Yahoo report.
Perry joined Journey in 1978, helping to shift its focus from an early progressive bent toward platinum pop status almost immediately. But the time the group released 1981’s Escape, they were selling out football stadiums.
But after a tumultuous period around the recording of 1986’s Raised on Radio, the group split until 1996 — and then Perry walked away for good, despite a return to the charts with Trial by Fire. After struggling through hip problems, Perry hasn’t recorded since and, in fact, hasn’t spoken to his former bandmate Neal Schon since the group was recognized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2005.
Journey has continued forward with Arnel Pineda, a singer they found via YouTube, since 2007.
More recently, Perry has said he’s returned to a stash of uncompleted songs, and news emerged that he had signed a music publishing deal. It’s unclear how Perry’s current health setback will impact this possible studio project.
Perry, however, remains optimistic: “I’ve been told they think they got it all,” he says, “and no other treatments are required.”
