A series of separate touring dates for ousted members of the Beach Boys is now turning into a new studio project led by band mastermind Brian Wilson. He’s working on both with Al Jardine and David Marks.
Sessions for the as-yet-unnamed 11th solo album for Wilson, announced by Capitol Records, are taking place at Los Angeles’ Ocean Way Studios, and are also said to include guitarist Jeff Beck, Jim Keltner, Vinnie Colaiuta, Tal Wilkenfeld, Don Was and Jeffrey Foskett from the Wilson concert band, among others.
The group won’t be called “the Beach Boys,” after Mike Love wrested the official moniker from Wilson years ago. It was also Love who unceremoniously ended the band’s long-awaited, and wildly celebrated, 50th anniversary tour — continuing forward with a unit under the official title that includes Bruce Johnston, while Wilson and Co. were left behind.
The nasty split was even more shocking since it followed a hit comeback album, as well. Afterward, Wilson hinted that no such future reunions with Love would happen again.
There has been no release date set for the new Wilson album with Jardine and Marks. The three have seven concert dates set between July and October already.
“I was really moved by the fans’ excitement about The Beach Boys’ album and tour last year,” Wilson said in a release. “It charged me up and my head was full of music — I just couldn’t wait to get back into the studio to let it out.”
