‘It didn’t work’: After departure from Nine Inch Nails, Adrian Belew refocuses on inventive solo project

Having departed the Nine Inch Nails touring band, Adrian Belew is focusing on his long-awaited, ever-evolving new solo project “FLUX.” His contributions will still reportedly appear on the forthcoming NIN studio album.

Belew has been working in Daniel Rowland for some two years on “FLUX,” which allows for a completely unique listening experience each time. Songs are presented as ever-changing works, with different vocals, lyrics, guitar solos, found sounds, effects and remixes.

“This is something which, to my knowledge, has never been done,” Belew says of “FLUX,” “that rare entity: something new — a different way to enjoy music.” The subtitle for Belew’s project is “Music That Is Never The Same Twice.” “Think about that for a moment,” he adds. “How is that possible? What will it sound like?”

Nine Inch Nails leader Trent Reznor said in February that his decision to restart the band was made, in part, because of a collaboration with Belew — whom he said helped him “rethink the idea” of what NIN could be. The band has since announced both a new tour of North America and the release of the album Hesitation Marks,.

Belew isn’t the first member to depart, however. Nine Inch Nails bassist Eric Avery has already been replaced by Robin Finck. Responding to questions about his own split from NIN, Belew said simply: “It didn’t work.”
