‘Out plotting the Faces’ future’: Talks still moving forward on Rod Stewart reunion

Rod Stewart’s hope to reunite with the Faces was thwarted by illness just before their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, and then by Ron Wood joining the on-going Rolling Stones reunion concert series.

But the idea isn’t dead.

Stewart, in a new talk with The Hollywood Reporter, says he and Wood have continued discussing the idea of getting back together.

These discussions first began in 2008, and in November of that year the Faces’ surviving members — also including Kenney Jones and Ian McLagan — even held rehearsals.

Ultimately, nothing came of that, however, and by 2009 the group was appearing minus Stewart at London’s Royal Albert Hall — but with a series of guest vocalists, including Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall. Bill Wyman, Wood’s long-time Stones’ band mate filled in for bassist Ronnie Lane — who died in 1997 after battling multiple sclerosis.

A Stewart-less version of the group, with Hucknall back on board and the Sex Pistols’ Glen Matlock on bass, then toured in 2010-11.

By 2012, with the group ramping up toward its hall of fame honor, Stewart was ready to leave behind his decade-long songbook series — both in terms of putting out rock music again, and by getting back together with his old friends in the Faces.

Time, a new album of originals, appeared earlier this month. Stewart then posted a photograph of himself having dinner with Wood on Twitter — saying “the noses have it.”

“Me and Ronnie were out plotting the Faces’ future,” Stewart tells THR.

The Stones tour is all that is standing in the way right now, Stewart adds. “”It all depends when Mick (Jagger) and his band decide to knock it on the head. I can’t imagine they’re gonna do anything after they’ve done this tour. So this is what we keep waiting for. It’s either the Stones are doing a tour or I’m doing a tour, and no one can make a commitment — although we do want to do it.”
