‘It’s never been burned like that’: Sammy Hagar on his reunion with Journey’s Neal Schon

Sammy Hagar is previewing an upcoming solo album that finds him reuniting with Journey’s Neal Schon. The two first worked together as members of HSAS in the early 1980s.

Hagar’s fellow Chickenfoot members Michael Anthony and Chad Smith are also featured. “We had a blast today,” Hagar says in the video below, which finds the quartet goofing around on a couch.

Included is a snippet of their remake of “Goin’ Down,” a classic Don Nix original often covered by Chickenfoot, which features Joe Satriani on guitar. “It’s kind of the No. 1 jam song at (Hagar’s club) the Cabo Wabo,” the singer adds, “so, we recorded it — live as hell. Neal burned; it’s never been burned like that.” The group also did an original song, which Hagar says is “awesome.”

At one point, Hagar is seen on drums, while Smith puts his fingers in his ears. “We cut three new tracks for my new CD,” Hagar says, before he’s jokingly interrupted by Schon — who says: “I thought they were going on my CD!”

They also riff for awhile on being “the new, improved HSAS.” Hagar and Schon issued one album — 1984’s Through the Fire — under that monicker, but with Kenny Aaronson and Mike Shrieve in place of Anthony and Smith, before Hagar joined Van Halen and Schon returned to Journey.
