Vital Information’s Steve Smith, drummer with Journey during its turn-of-the-1980s platinum heyday, will unveil a collection of art created from his own musical performances called The Fabric of Rhythm on May 15, 2013.
The pieces are created through a detail and meticulous process of light manipulation and time lapse filming. (A video preview is below.) Smith’s collection, which will debut exclusively at stevesmithdrumart.com, will be limited to 100 pieces.
“This is new and it’s fresh — it’s a vibrant idea,” Smith says.
The goal, he adds, was to capture the unseen on canvas.
“Symmetry of motion is something that I strive for, symmetry with my hands, and in this case we even got into filming some of the motion of the bass drum pedals,” Smith says. “So there will be some clear examples of what this symmetry looks like, because you can see this symmetry as it happens in time — but it’s gone in a second. This will bring it into focus, and then capture it.”
Smith was a member of Journey from 1978-85, and then returned for a celebrated 1996 reunion. He also worked with Jean-Luc Ponty and Ronnie Montrose before forming the jazz band Vital Information in 1982.
Smith recently began a series of 30th anniversary releases in celebration of VI’s founding, including Live! One Great Night.
