‘It could be spectacular’: William Shatner updates new album project with Yes alum Billy Sherwood

Former Star Trek star William Shatner gives an update on his upcoming Billy Sherwood-produced studio project, including the album title.

“I’ve laid down 13 tracks,” Shatner tells KTLA, “with lyrics which I have written — and the music to which he is writing. We’re getting great soloists from all over. Right now the album is named Red Shift, after the way light changes to red. It could be spectacular.”

Shatner, of course, inhabited the role of James T. Kirk on television from 1966-69 and then over seven Star Trek films from 1979 through ’94. But his recording career goes back to 1968′s The Transformed Man, and album that included dramatic recitations of pieces by William Shakespeare, as well as “Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan and “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” by the Beatles, among others.

Shatner made light of his unique vocal style during the talk with KTLA, too: “I am a speaker/singer,” he adds, laughing. “I’m also a singer/speaker.”

After issuing a pair of late-1970s albums, Shatner has been more active in recording since the turn of the century. Has Been was followed by Seeking Major Tom in 2011. Sherwood was a member of Yes in the 1990s, and has earlier produced albums by Paul Rodgers (Bad Company), John Wetton (Asia, King Crimson), and Yes.

Shatner, a deeply passionate horseman, was on set to discuss the 23rd annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show, to be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013, at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center.
