Todd Rundgren held an online fan chat Sunday to discuss his newest studio effort, and an upcoming tour to start in May. He’ll also hold another edition of “Toddstock,” this time celebrating his 65th birthday, in June outside of New Orleans.

Rundgren said the recording for State, which he handled alone, “took about three months in the studio,” though he added that he also participated in a “couple months research before that.” Asked about the track “In My Mouth,” from State, Rundgren flashed some of his trademark humor: “Wish I could say what the song means.”

Rundgren confirmed that the upcoming tour will feature songs from State, as well as key cuts from throughout his career. Rundgren also said longtime cohort Prairie Prince will be playing digital drums, so as to capture the sounds of all of his many eras. Asked if dancing would be compulsory at the shows, he added: “Dancing is not compulsory — it is irresistible!?”

Rundgren conducted the talk via Google Hangout, and had announced that it would also be streamed through his YouTube channel — though that didn’t initially happen. The event began late, and found Rundgren disappearing for stretches as problems with Google’s “join” button ensued. Forty-three minutes into the Hangout, he switched to Facebook to post an apology for the connectivity issues.

That prompting several participants to begin asking technical questions. Rundgren’s chat response: “Beats me how this works. My first time in here!”
