‘Tom is buried in the studio’: Long-awaited new Boston studio album could be here by mid year

It’s a good time to be a fan of Boston, with the recent release of unheard music from late original frontman Brad Delp and now the promised release of a long-awaited studio recording from Tom Scholz and Co. — more than a decade after its last one.

Of course, anyone who has followed Boston knows that waiting is part of the deal.

2002’s Corporate America, the final Boston effort to feature Delp, was just the fifth album from the famously fastidious Scholz — who took eight years between Boston’s 1978 sophomore project Don’t Look Back and the follow-up Third Stage. Another eight years elapsed before the appearance of Walk On, while Delp and guitarist Barry Goudreau worked in the offshoot band RTZ.

There was some question what would become of Boston, however, after Delp’s suicide in 2007. Ultimately, the group has gone forward with Tommy DeCarlo and David Victor sharing vocal duties.

This retooled version of Boston toured last summer, boasting an end-of-the-world theme in honor of the Mayan calendar controversy, and then appeared at this year’s NAMM event, as well.

Next, we get new music. First, the Brad Delp Foundation began streaming a terrific 1973 tune called “Alone,” which is to be included in an as-yet-untitled set of solo compositions in the future. Now Scholz, in comments published on Boston’s official web site, says an original studio album could be ready for mid year, with only a few remixes to be done then the final sequencing and mastering.

“Tom is buried in the studio, lovingly coaxing his legacy analogue equipment to bear with him just a little longer while he wraps up the mix of his latest song, ‘Someday,'” according to Boston’s official web site. “Although he has listened to it more times than he cares to count, he is still very excited about it, saying: ‘This final song might be the title track for the new Boston studio album; it reminds me of the up tempo rockers I wrote for the debut album over 30 years ago.'”
