Streams: Kingsley Flood, “Down” from Battles (2013)

Think Kinks-style melodies goosed along by the flippant energy of the Clash, with Dylan-esque level narratives skittering over the top, and you have the D.C.-based Kingsley Flood. Stream a track from their new release Battles here!

Battles produced by Sam Kassirer (who’s worked with Langhorne Slim, Josh Ritter and others), was recorded at the rural Great North Sound Society facility in Maine — and it retains that locale’s sense of close-knit camaraderie surrounded by wide-open spaces.

Peopled by a talented group of musicians, Kingsley Flood boasts a violinist who can switch over to sax, and a keyboardist who played trumpet — creating an impromptu horn section at a moment’s notice. The six-piece features Nick Balkin, Chris Barrett, George Hall, Naseem Khuri, Jenée Morgan and Travis Richter.

Already, Kingsley Flood has opened for Grace Potter, Julia Stone, Brett Dennen and Langhorne Slim, and earned multiple nods in the Boston Music Awards and the Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll.

Following on the heels of 2010’s well-received debut Dust Windows, and a six-song 2011 EP called Colder Still that received great notices from NRP, Paste and Esquire, this mature new project just might be the fulcrum that launches Kingsley Flood onto the national stage.
