‘Lead, bass, drums and howling at the moon’: Van Halen’s return has David Lee Roth all amped up

Outside of a few pick up dates in the U.S., which David Lee Roth attributes to filling in when somebody else dropped out, Van Halen is going to focus on dates outside of the U.S. in 2013.

That could mean, Roth says, has many as 50 to 60 concerts overseas before the group returns home.

[SOMETHING ELSE! REWIND: Start complaining – really complaining – about Van Halen, and most people run right for Gary Cherone. Or else Sammy Hagar. Not us. We always expected more from the Roth era.]

Van Halen’s guitar-playing ace Eddie and drumming sibling Alex reunited with Roth last year for their first studio album since 1984, with Eddie’s song Wolfgang filling in on bass. After releasing A Different Kind of Truth, and hitting the road for an extensive set of dates, Eddie was felled by a bout of diverticulitis.

In all, 31 concerts across North America were scrubbed, as everything got put on hold until earlier this month, when new Van Halen dates finally started tricking out again.

Van Halen is set to headline the Rock USA Festival’s final night, on July 20 at Oshkosh, Wisconsin, on a bill with Bret Michaels, Queensryche, Sevendust, Ratt, Jackyl and Dokken, among others. The group will also play a date in Sydney and a trio of shows in Japan this summer.

That’s got Roth amped up again.

“Van Halen is a pure and uncut kind of music; it’s lead, bass, drums and howling at the moon,” Roth tells Opie and Anthony in the video clip above, completely riffing. “It’s a little bit like getting drunk on shots of really good Kentucky bourbon. You’ll have a great night — but you won’t want to see us again in three years.”
