Mott the Hoople’s Ian Hunter isn’t about to start slowing down: ‘Otherwise I’m a real miserable chap’

Fresh off the release of a tough, politically charged album called When I’m President, Ian Hunter continues a fast-paced solo career in the wake of his early successes with Mott the Hoople.

Up next is an European acoustic tour, set to begin next week. Hunter will be joined by guitarist Andy York (John Mellencamp), bassist David Roe (Johnny Cash) and special guest Jason Ringenberg (Jason and the Scorchers). Complete tour dates and stops are included below.

Hunter is also confirmed for an appearance on the Isle of Wight Festival’s main stage this June.

The 73-year-old led Mott the Hoople from its founding in 1969 through 1974, when the band split. He also was there for a celebrated 2009 reunion. The band, which also included future Bad Company co-founder Mick Ralphs, is best known for “All The Young Dudes,” which went to No. 3 in the UK.

As a solo artist, often working with David Bowie sideman Mick Ronson, Hunter produced “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” (subsequently a hit for Great White) and “Cleveland Rocks” (which became the theme song for the Drew Carey Show).

More recently, Hunter toured with Ringo Starr’s 2001 edition of the All-Starrs, along with Greg Lake, Roger Hodgson and others. In all, he’s released 20 solo albums, after working on 10 with Mott.

When I’m President focuses on several key moments in American history, including the country’s outlaw Western days to the bloody conflict of the Civil War.

“The only thing that keeps me happy is the constant creative process,” Hunter tells Radio.com. “Without that, I’m an extremely miserable person. So I enjoy that. What I do is I work the record, but when I get home and I’m off the road, I have to start to writing, otherwise I’m a real miserable chap.”
