‘You should ask him’: Al Jardine can’t understand why Mike Love split up the Beach Boys either

Al Jardine still struggles to put into words exactly what happened at the end of what had once been a celebrated 50th anniversary reunion tour by the Beach Boys. He seems, in many ways, as surprised as anyone on the outside looking in.

Sifting through the wreckage of yet another ugly split, he finds himself off the road — awaiting a July date with the rest of the Beach Boy alums who didn’t fit into Mike Love’s on-going tour plans.

Love is continuing with the Beach Boys name, fronting a band that includes second-generation member Bruce Johnston and a group of sidemen. Brian Wilson, inarguably the mastermind of their most important work, was left to set separate concert dates. He invited Jardine and original guitarist David Marks to join him this summer.

Meanwhile, Jardine issued a solo album last year, A Postcard from California, and sold it in conjunction with the anniversary tour. But he insists his real passion these days is not for studio work, but for a return to the stage.

Beyond the scheduled appearance with Wilson, however, he tells Montgomery News that he’s at loose ends.

The blame for all of this, it’s clear, rests with Love.

“I talked to Mike about it a couple of times and he just wanted some distance from it,” Jardine tells the News’ Mike Morsch. “He wanted to get away and not do this for a while with us. You should probably interview him and ask him. For whatever reason, he didn’t want to do it anymore.”
