For Grammy award-winning Toto cofounder and sideman to the stars Steve Lukather, getting to know the Beatles’ Ringo Starr — really know him, as a person — has been the best part of his stint with the newest All-Starr Band.
Lukather is back on the road with a group that includes Santana and Journey co-founder Gregg Rolie, Mr. Mister’s Richard Page and Todd Rundgren — all of whom have become friends on the road.
It’s the talks with Starr, however, that resonate the most for Lukather, a confessed Beatlemaniac. Yet, more often than not, they don’t speak about the Fabs at all.
“Ringo is my friend, someone that I deeply admire as a human being,” Lukather says in the attached video from FaceCulture. “You get past ‘that was the guy in the Beatles.’ That legacy is so rich, it’s unbelievable; I can’t even put it into words. But he becomes a mentor, someone who shows you how to live your life, and how to carry yourself as an adult. Even growing older in life, he’s still retained that youthful vibe. Seeing how healthy he is, and how he views life. It is very inspiring to me.”
The newest All-Starr tour has already hit Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, and Brisbane and Sydney, Australia. Melbourne is next, on Saturday, followed by Adelaide and Perth on Febuary 19 and 21, respectively. The All-Starrs then head to Japan.
