Roger Waters’ 2013 tour of The Wall through a series of outdoor venues in Europe promises even more outsized thrills for fans of one of Pink Floyd’s most recognizable albums — and the chance to hear something new, as well.
For instance, the crashing plane might cross over the crowd in some eight seconds during an indoor concert. In an open-air hall, that journey is nearly doubled — and the resulting impact on stage becomes a spectacular fireball. “It’s beautiful,” Waters says, in the video interview below. The projection screens will include new HD technology, too.

Meanwhile, crews will erect the largest free-standing roof for the performance area that’s ever been built. The giant wall, constructed along the back of the performance area, presents its own problems, as Waters races from one end of it to the other: “I sometimes get stranded out at one end,” he says, laughing. “‘Fuck! I’ve got to get back to the middle of the stage in about eight seconds!'”
Perhaps most interesting to long-time followers: Waters is also featuring a newer original song.
Positioned after the regular performance of “Another Brick in the Wall, Part II” from the 1979 Pink Floyd opus, “The Ballad of Jean Charles de Menezes” focuses on the tragic death of a Brazilian who was shot dead in 2005 after being wrongly accused with participating in a London bombing attempt. “I love doing that, because it’s a surprise to people,” Waters says. “They’ve never heard it before.”
The 2013 tour gets underway in July in Ireland, with dates to follow in Germany, Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, France — and England, of course. “A little island off the coast of Europe,” Waters deadpans.
