‘You’re always trying to push it a little bit higher’: After big year, Tedeschi Trucks Band returns to studio

Derek Trucks is coming off a signature year, highlighted by a Grammy win for the Tedeschi Trucks Band and an appearance with wife Susan Tedeschi at the White House. They’ll return to the studio in February, however, with plenty of goals still in front of them.

“You want to make a record that’s going to stand up with some of your favorite records of all time,” Trucks tells K-Rock, 96.1-FM in Fort Myers, Florida. “There have been songs that we have cut or written, there’ve been records we’ve made, where you feel like you maybe get close to that mark, but you’re always trying to push it a little bit higher.”

Revelator, the Tedeschi Trucks Band’s most recent studio effort, earned the Grammy for best blues album in 2012. They followed that with a live set last summer, called Everybody’s Talkin.’ Trucks and Tedeschi, who merged their two promising careers by forming an eponymous band in 2010, also appeared at President Obama’s “Red, White and Blues” event along with B.B. King, the Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger, and others.

“We’ve been scratching things off the bucket list this year,” Trucks says, chuckling.

Don’t expect any laurel resting, however, from the Tedeschi Trucks Band — which also includes Kofi Burbridge, Tyler Greenwell, J.J. Johnson, Kebbi Williams, Maurice Brown and Saunders Sermons.

“I think that something that drives you as a musician is, you’re always looking forward to that next project,” Trucks tells K-Rock. “You want to make an album, or you want to make music, that’s going to be here for a long, long time.”
