Peter Frampton is at work with his former bandmate Jerry Shirley on an expanded album showcasing Humble Pie’s legendary stint in May 1971 at the Fillmore East.

A portion was featured on Humble Pie’s Performance Rocking the Fillmore double album, released in 1971, but this new project will include unedited recordings of all four sets, Frampton confirms via Facebook. A release date has not yet been confirmed.

Shirley and Frampton, who later rose to solo fame with the multi-million selling Frampton Comes Alive, are the only surviving members of Humble Pie. The drummer and guitarist were joined by vocalist Steve Marriott and bassist Greg Ridley.

Performance Rockin’ the Fillmore, Frampton’s finale with Humble Pie, went to No. 21 on the Billboard charts, becoming the group’s first gold-selling disc.

Highlights included scorching takes on Muddy Waters’ “Rollin’ Stone,” Willie Dixon’s “I’m Ready,” and Dr. John’s “I Walk on Gilded Splinters,” as well as the Humble Pie original “Stone Cold Fever.” The 1971 release yielded one single, an edited version of the Ashford and Simpson classic “I Don’t Need No Doctor” that got to No. 73.

Frampton said neither he nor Shirley had listened to the old Fillmore tapes in decades before they began work on this new reissue.

“Jerry and I got extremely excited hearing this unreleased Humble Pie that hasn’t been heard in 42 years,” Frampton said. Of Shirley, Frampton added: “He was the engine that drove HP. An amazing drummer and my dear friend and brother!”

Shirley went on to work on Marriott’s solo projects, helped co-found the 1980s group Fastway (best known for “Say What You Will”) and later led his own version of Humble Pie. Marriott died in 1991, while Ridley passed in 2003.

“As the surviving members,” Frampton says, “we are very excited to be able to be working on this new project. … We know Greg Ridley and Steve Marriott would be pleased we were working on this.”
