David Lee Roth celebrates, in his own inimitable way, a No. 16 ranking for Van Halen’s “Stay Frosty” on the Rolling Stone magazine list of the Top 10 songs for 2012: By drinking a tall boy beer and discussing a favorite tattoo.
“Stay Frosty,” a song from the reunion album A Different Kind of Truth which riffs off a stay-cool saying of Roth’s eye-surgeon dad’s from childhood, is actually an update of Van Halen’s earlier “Ice Cream Man,” he says, in the newest episode of his internet program the Roth Show.
The saying means so much to Roth, in fact, that he has the saying tattooed in a special place.
“In the music business, I can’t think of a better axiom,” Roth says. “I have several tattoos, and the most important is right here on this hip (points to left side). Ready to draw at any time, is that expression in Latino script. … It’s says ‘stay frosty’ right here and, then of course, over on this side (motions to right hip) there’s the trace outline of a .45 caliber automatic chambering pistol — full size. Kind of a yin, yang thing I do.”
We find Roth dressed for a lengthy portion of the attached video in his finest black suit and knocking back a giant Busch beer — which he coyly claims is “the breakfast of champions.”
