Led Zeppelin, appearing last night on David Letterman’s television program, paid tribute to fellow Kennedy Center honoree Buddy Guy — with Jimmy Page enthusing about Guy’s “out of this world” guitar style.
Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones, the band’s surviving members, were recognized with the United States’ highest arts award on December 2, 2012, along with Guy, actor Dustin Hoffman, ballerina Natalia Makarova and Letterman, a comedian and long-time late-night TV host. Led Zeppelin then appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman a day later.
The Kennedy Center awards ceremony will be broadcast December 26, 2012 on CBS. Led Zeppelin’s complete interview with Letterman is attached, in two parts.
Page remembered hearing Guy when he was still a youngster, hanging out with fellow Yardbirds alum Jeff Beck.
“We were still probably teenagers when we heard Buddy Guy,” Page tells Letterman. “I remember being with Jeff, and playing the vinyl — which was called Folk Festival of the Blues. Buddy Guy is really young on it, and he’s playing with Muddy Waters and Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin’ Wolf. But he sings two songs on it, and just the whole delivery of it — the passion and the drama. His guitar is out of this world.”
Led Zeppelin has just released Celebration Day, a 2007 reunion concert with drummer Jason Bonham — son of the band’s late original drummer John Bonham — to a wildly enthusiastic response. The album debuted at No. 9 in America, and at No. 4 in the UK.
