Record Store Day/Black Friday 2012 picks: Bob Dylan, Joe Strummer, Miles Davis, My Morning Jacket

Where else will you find, side by side by side, new reissues of Miles Davis’ Porgy and Bess, Nirvana’s 1992 compilation Incesticide, and the Fat Boys’ Pizza Box album — packaged in (yes) a pizza box?

Yep. Welcome back, Record Store Day! Special release items will include exclusives as well as music that will see preview release on November 23, 2012 — and then be “officially” issued at a later date.

We’ve broken our recommendation lists down within these same categories to create a handy guide for this week’s Black Friday edition of Record Store Day …

RECORD STORE DAY EXCLUSIVE RELEASES

Bob Dylan – “Duquesne Whistle” (7″ Vinyl): The A side is one of those classic modern-day Dylan songs — lyrics marked by loneliness and chaos, set to a lean, bizarrely engaging Western swing. The B side? A new version of “Meet Me in the Morning,” recorded during the sessions for 1975’s Blood on the Tracks.
Gaslight Anthem – “Hold You Up” (10″ Vinyl): A trio of acoustic songs, set on clear vinyl? Cool. With a poster? Cool! Wait, one of the songs is a Bon Iver cover? COOL!
Joe Strummer – Live at Action Town Hall (LP): Clash fans get a long, long, long-awaited chance to hear Strummer and guitarist Mick Jones on stage together here. Jones joined in for the encore during a 2002 benefit concert for striking firefighters. Later that same year, Strummer died from an undiagnosed heart defect.
Leonard Cohen/Jeff Buckley – “Hallelujah” (7″ Vinyl): Cohen’s 1984 original is on one side, with the late Buckley’s stunning redo — done a decade later — on the other. Whereas Cohen’s always seemed weary with hard-won wisdom, Buckley’s incandescent version shimmers with a dignified faith.
My Morning Jacket – “It Makes No Difference” (10′ Vinyl): Get there early if you’re interested. MMJ is offering just 2,000 copies of this live rendition of a classic from the Band, cut with Brittany Howard of the Alabama Shakes at the most recent Newport Folk Festival.

Nirvana – Incesticide (12″ Vinyl): This compilation, first issued 20 years ago, has been remastered and now includes a lyric sheet. Better still: it’s now housed in a gatefold sleeve after being set to 45 rpm for higher fidelity.
Norah Jones – Little Broken Hearts Remix EP (10″ Vinyl): A remix of a stunning project, one where Jones seems to be stripped bare emotionally. Outside her own comfort zone, maybe even outside her own feelings, she strikes some of the most powerful chords yet.
Volbeat – Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil (12″ Picture Disc): Part of a trio of RSD picture disc releases, this one is notable for its brilliant Johnny Cash tribute “Sad Man’s Tongue,” which starts out sounding like down-home rockabilly and ends up just ear-meltingly loud.
White Stripes – “Fell in Love with a Girl”/”Hotel Yorba”/”Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground” (7″ Vinyl): A trio of singles highlighted by the crunchy punk of “Fell in Love,” backed with the Burt Bacharach composition “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself” — and, whoa, remember that Kate Moss pole-dancing video?

ALSO OF INTEREST: If you’re flush, you might also spring for … Band Of Horses, “Sonic Ranch Sessions: Mirage Rock and Relly’s Dream” (7″ Vinyl); Beach Boys, “Surfin’ Safari” (10″ Vinyl); Biz Markie, The Biz Never Sleeps (12″ picture disc); Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band, “Abba Zaba/Yellow Brick Road,” “Plastic Factory/Where There’s a Woman,” “Upon the My-o-My/I Got Love on My Mind” (7″ Vinyl); Gene Clark, “Echoes/I Found You” (7″ Vinyl); David Bowie, “The Jean Genie” (7″ picture disc); Fat Boys, Fat Boys Pizza Box (12″ picture disc); Grateful Dead, Live at Winterland: 5/30/1971 (LP); Cee Lo Green and Donny Hathaway, “This Christmas” (7″ Vinyl); Merle Haggard, Capitol Rarities (10″ Vinyl); Jellyfish, Stack-a-Tracks (CD); Joan Jett, Bad Reputation, with bonus CD (LP); Lumineers, Winter EP (10″ Vinyl); John Mayer, The Complete 2012 Performances Collection (12″ Vinyl); Joey Ramone, Ya Know?: Limited Edition Deluxe Album (CD); Rolling Stones, The Rolling Stones EP (7″ Vinyl); Lucinda Williams/Michael Chapman, “That Time of Night” (10″ Vinyl); and Frank Zappa, “Why Don’Cha Do Me Right, Big Leg Mama: (7″ Vinyl).

RECORD STORE DAY FIRST RELEASES

Eric Burdon and the Greenhornes – Eric Burdon and the Greenhornes EP (12″ Vinyl): This four-song set has the dangerous feel of old-time rock and roll, from the racket being made by these Cincinnati garage rockers to its frontman, who years after leading the Animals and War is still all yowling, junkyard-dog menace.

Miles Davis – Miles Ahead; Porgy and Bess; Sketches of Spain (12″ Vinyl): A sneak peek at the newest reissues of these classic sides. A favorite: Miles Ahead. Done in a trio of three-hour sessions, with no rehearsals, Gil Evans’ counter-rhythmic charts find a perfect symmetry with Davis’ long, cerulean notes.

ALSO OF INTEREST: Can’t wait for the actual release date? Here are a few others worth searching out on Friday … Marshall Crenshaw, “I Don’t See You Laughing Now” (10″ Vinyl); Johnny Cash, Fabulous Johnny Cash (12″ Vinyl); Janis Joplin/Big Brother and the Holding Company, Cheap Thrills (12″ Vinyl); Judas Priest, Screaming for Vengeance (12″ picture disc); Buddy Miller and Jim Lauderdale, Buddy and Jim (12″ Vinyl and CD); Shins, “No Way Down/Fall of ’82 [Swift Sessions]” (7″ Vinyl); Tenacious D, Jazz (LP); and Velvet Underground, Velvet Underground and Nico: Scepter Studios Acetate (12″ Vinyl).
