Van Halen frontman David Lee Roth, in the new episode of his online program “Roth TV,” pokes fun at his own 1980s-era sartorial choices — adding commentary to the over-the-top video for his No. 12 hit “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody.”
“The suit that I am wearing at the desk?” he drolly asks. “The giraffe called. He wants it back.”
Roth’s commentary begins at the 19 minute mark of his nearly half-hour show. “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody,” original mid-1950s hit for Louis Prima, was part of Roth’s first solo album after splitting with Van Halen after 1984.
Roth’s 1985 video was famous for its parody sequences featuring familiar stars of the day, from Michael Jackson to Billy Idol, even Willie Nelson.
“As wardrobes go, sartorial choices like these don’t just happen,” Roth says, as his video self bursts into a set with a Cyndi Lauper lookalike. They’re cultivated — slowly and meticulously over many, many cocktails. Cocktails of all formats, in all types of glasses. Use your imagination.”
During the scene with the Boy George lookalike, Roth deadpans: “This is the look that got me the Renaissance Fair gig.”
Roth is on an extended hiatus from Van Halen, which released the long-awaited reunion project A Different Kind Of Truth earlier this year, as guitarist Eddie Van Halen recuperates from surgery following a difficult bout with diverticulitis. That halted a sold-out tour. Van Halen is expected to be sidelined for the rest of 2012.
