Halloween special: Vincent Price – Master of the Macabre (2008)

This is a collection of three American radio plays called “The Pit And The Pendulum,” “Fugue In C Minor” and “Present Tense” from 1944 and 1957, as broadcast on CBS’ Suspense program.

Vincent Price was always a busy man and radio was just one of the many mediums available to him at the time — along with motion pictures, television, art, etc. His Edgar Allan Poe-themed movies of the 1960s were very successful money makers and are still revered by horror fans everywhere.

That was followed by his long-out-of-print horror themed LPs from 1969-73, which were originally released through Capitol and Camden records in the USA. It’s on those records that Price’s creepier aspects are in its fullest bloom, something for which he’d first become known with his movies.

Price, of course, is the star amongst the small cast here. Still, with Master of the Macabre, his unmistakably distinctive voice — known, then as now, the world over — shines throughout.
