Wolfgang Van Halen, filling in on Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti’s solo tour, says he arrived in Birmingham, England to a rude welcome — and from the British singing group One Direction, no less.

Over a series of hilarious tweets, the Van Halen bassist claims to have had a run in with One Direction in a hotel lobby — and he gives back as good as he got, first labeling them a “shitty boy band,” and then “dickheads.” Van Halen says he was with Eric Friedman, vocalist for Creed and Tremonti, and drummer Garrett Whitlock when the incident occurred.

Wolfgang, who took over for Michael Anthony in Van Halen as the band reunited with original lead singer David Lee Roth, was asked to join the Tremonti tour when bassist Brian Marshall left for personal reasons.

He was available because Van Halen, after releasing the well-received A Different Kind of Truth and beginning a sold-out tour, was have taken a break. His father — guitarist and band co-founder Eddie Van Halen — had to undergo surgery after a serious bout of diverticulitis.

Van Halen eventually cancelled all of its remaining North American dates, and postponed a series of shows in Japan originally set for November.

Who knew all of that was putting Wolfgang on a collision course with the singers of “What Makes You Beautiful”?

Wolfgang Van Halen first tweeted this: “Fun fact: Was just insulted by that shitty boy band #OneDirection in the lobby of our hotel this morning! Greetings Birmingham!”

Then, after his followers asked for more details: “No joke. That ACTUALLY happened. That group of kids in #OneDirection were dickheads to @IIEROCKII @GWDrums and I.”

Finally, there came this zinger: “They must call themselves that because all of their hair points in #OneDirection”
