‘The spirit seems unstoppable’: Neil Young and Crazy Horse apparently planning a new live album, too

Is Neil Young preparing yet a third new album with Crazy Horse — this one a live release? It would seem so, based on a post at his official web site.

Young had last recorded with Crazy Horse in 2003 before returning with a vengeance in 2012, first issuing a collection of garage-rocking redos of traditional songs on Americana and next an album of all-original tunes on the forthcoming Psychedelic Pill, due October 30, 2012. They’re already on the road, having appeared at Farm Aid, among other stops. This current tour through North America is slated to continue into December.

Young and Crazy Horse have earlier issued several concert recordings, most notably Rust Never Sleeps in 1978 and then Weld in 1990 — as well as 1979’s Live Rust and 1997’s Year Of The Horse, with the latter serving as a soundtrack for a Jim Jarmusch documentary on the group.

Rust Never Sleeps was atypical of most live projects, however, in that all of the songs were then new — including “My, My, Hey Hey (Out of the Blue).” Weld recorded during a tour in support of Ragged Glory, was also accompanied by a feedback-laden album called Arc.

Now comes a short news item on Young site, saying: “The third episode of A Rust Trilogy, which began with Rust Never Sleeps in 1978, and continued with Weld in 1990, now concludes with Alchemy in 2012. Things have changed, yet they stay the same. Alchemy, like Rust and Weld, finds the boys at another stage of life’s journey. Time has taken its toll, yet the spirit seems unstoppable.”
