Sparks Fly On E Street: Bruce Springsteen, “Cover Me” (1984)

I kind of had my doubts about “Cover Me” early on, mostly because 1984 wasn’t very far from the disco era and I hadn’t shaken off the remnants of my snotty “Disco Sucks” attitude (which was in itself a lie, but that’s a topic for another day).

Despite that stuttering and perhaps too-insistent beat, I was won over by the blazing guitar parts. Sure, it’s a fairly simple rocker but sometimes that’s all a person needs. Check out this killer verion Paris in 1985. The reverb-soaked intro builds up some decent tension before the launch, and Bruce really tears into it near the end.
