Something Else! sneak peek: The Rolling Stones, “Doom And Gloom” (2012)

“Doom and Gloom,” the Rolling Stones’ first new song in more than six years, finds Mick Jagger at his preening, taking-no-shit best — bitching about people who bitch, spittle-spewing like old times.

Meanwhile, Ron Wood and Keith Richards tangle and untangle with a nasty aggression. Jagger then takes a nasty turn on the harmonica, connecting the scraggly feel of this garage rocker to their legendary 1972 opus Exile on Main Street — even as Charlie Watts stays so deep in the pocket that he probably emerged from these sessions covered in lint.

It doesn’t have the generation-rattling groove of “Satisfaction” or “Start Me Up,” but it’s got enough to attitude to convince naysayers that the Rolling Stones still possess enough ass-whipping attitude to hang with yet another era of pretenders to their throne as the self-proclaimed world’s greatest rock and roll band.

“Doom and Gloom” is the first of a pair of songs set for inclusion on the Stones’ latest greatest-hit package, GRRR!, which is set for release on November 12, 2012.
