Sparks Fly On E Street: Bruce Springsteen, "Independence Day" (1980)

Back in Bruce’s storytelling days, he would introduce “Independence Day” with the sad tale of how he and his dad never did see eye-to-eye. It was years later that they finally could talk, and there was more than a little regret that they couldn’t have met at that same point during the years gone by.

I never had that kind of regret with regard to my father as I was lucky enough to spend a ton of time with him. Dad had a pretty severe heart attack when I was only in 2nd grade, forcing him into early retirement. After his recovery, he was always there to toss around the baseball, to teach me about woodworking…you know, “Dad stuff.”

During Dad’s last year, as me and TheWife™ were driving him back from a doctor’s appointment, we drove by a small house and Dad said “Hey, look at that blue house. You always wanted to live in a bright blue house when you were a kid.” Yeah, blue was my favorite color but the memory of that particular desire wasn’t strong in my mind. What was strong was the huge amount of time that had passed between then and now. It drove home the reality of Dad’s decline in a bittersweet way.

Yesterday was Dad’s birthday. April 1st. No joke. Happy birthday Dad.
